The truth is that there are many answers to this question, but I am going to give you my opinion regarding the answer to this very powerful question.

Here it is my thought – “Work harder on yourself than you do on your job?”  How much time to do you think small business owners spend working on improving themselves?  The answer is quite definitely very little and yet most small business owners are not successful.  In fact, most are struggling to survive.

So, if you are serious about growing your business you need to learn more about the very thing that is going to grow your business.  Your sales and marketing skills and knowledge.

Sales and marketing advice for small business owners…

How are your sales and marketing results working out so far?  That is a question I asked 500 businesses who attended one of my talks recently and the overwhelming feeling was – not great!  Not enough leads, poor conversion rates.  Wasting money on marketing that is not working.  These were just some of the comments that I received.

The truth is that the results you get in sales and marketing, profit and growth are based on two things:

  1. Your knowledge – Knowing what to do
  2. Your actions – Taking action on your knowledge.

In my experience, these are the two sales and marketing problems most small business owners face

  1. They don’t have the required up-to-date marketing skills and knowledge
  2. They don’t have the time to take the appropriate sales and marketing actions.

Marketing is constantly evolving, with new ideas and strategies evolving on a weekly basis

Take LinkedIn as an example.  Most business owners are on LinkedIn and most believe it to be a great opportunity to market themselves.  However, 99.9% of small business owners I speak to have never been trained in how to use it and even if they had, if that training was more than 6 months ago, they need up to date that training, because LinkedIn has changed so, must in the past six months.

Another example is sales

Most small business owners are responsible for sales and again when I speak to business owners and ask them:

  1. Are you responsible for selling in their business?  They nearly always say yes!
  2. When was the last time you did any sales training?  I am usually told never, or not for over 3 years.  Questions – Would you trust the most important aspect of your business (creating sales) to someone who could not be bothered being trained in how to do it?
  3. How many calls did you make yesterday?  When I ask this question I am NEVER given a number.  Rather I am told, well I had this report to write and I have a client meeting and I did lots of client work.

Can you see the problem that I see in almost small businesses?

  1. Marketing only gets done when there is time and often there is no time
  2. When it does get done, it gets done by people who don’t understand it and have not been properly trained
  3. Sales calls and follow up calls are often not made!  When they are made, or they are made by someone who has not had any training for years and who has no system for selling and so it is all done on a wing and a prayer!

I don’t know if this rings any bells with you?  But if it does, then there is a solution and it is called RESULTS…
